Codex usage limits: check usage and reset times

Codex usage limits vary by plan, model and task. The usage dashboard and CLI show what remains; a forecast answers the harder question of whether that allowance will last until reset.

How to check Codex usage

Open the Codex usage dashboard to see the limits attached to your account. During an active Codex CLI session, run /status to see remaining limits without leaving the terminal. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists the current plan rules and available higher-usage options.

How Codex meters usage

For individual plans, local messages and cloud tasks share a five-hour window, and additional weekly limits may apply. The amount used depends on the task's size and complexity, the model and where the work runs. Longer sessions and larger codebases generally consume more allowance than focused edits.

What happens when you reach a limit

An active turn can continue, subject to fair-use limits. After that turn, the choices shown for your account may include waiting for reset, applying a banked reset, adding credits, changing plan or running local tasks with an API key. Why the remaining percentage is not enough

A dashboard tells you where you are now. It does not account for the pace of your recent work, the hours you normally stop coding or a sudden heavy session. Two people with the same remaining allowance can have very different chances of reaching reset.
